Is Sickness and Disease From God?

Many are confused about God… He’s good!

Many believe that God puts sickness and disease on people in order to teach them something or to punish them for their actions in this life. Is sickness and disease evil or does it actually come from God?  The Bible clearly states in John 10:10 that “The thief (Satan) comes to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I (Jesus) am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly”.  This seems clear enough but most people don’t let the Bible get in the way of what they believe.

God is not against us, He’s for us! God is good! Jesus came to bring us abundant life not sickness and disease. We need to understand who the true enemy is according to scripture and get our religious mindset out of the way.  Do you believe that?  Do you believe that your heavenly Father is good and that He only wants the best for you (Jer. 29:11)?

Every good thing in life comes from our heavenly Father (James 1:17) and He’s not for you one day and against you the next.  Your heavenly Father is not unpredictable and moody.  I like how the Message Bible puts it:

“So, my very dear friends, don’t get thrown off course. Every desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. There is nothing deceitful in God, nothing two-faced, nothing fickle. He brought us to life using the true Word, showing us off as the crown of all his creatures.”  James 1:16-18

But is sickness and disease evil?

Have you seen a mother pass away from kidney disease and leave behind three kids who grieved and questioned why God took their mommy? Have you watched while a loved one passes away gasping for air due to an incurable disease? Have you really taken a look at someone with a disease and the surrounding situation? Have you looked at your own life and situation and gotten mad?  Mad as Heaven! Disease comes to kill, steal and destroy life not to give life.  Kill, steal and destroy sounds like the mission of Satan to me not something in line with the mission of Jesus.

Have you ever noticed how you can tell who completed a job or task by simply looking at the outcome? For example, I can recognize the work of my toddler by simply looking at the mess in the living room or I can see a co-worker’s hands “all over” a project by simply looking at how it was done and the outcomes/fruit. The same can be said of your enemy. If it’s bad, it’s the work of Satan, but if it’s good you need to thank God.

One story in the New Testament in Luke 13 shows how the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light collided one day.  It talks about a woman who was twisted and bent over with severe pain and how she couldn’t even look up.  This poor woman had been in this condition for eighteen years.  Can you imagine being in constant pain and not being able to look up for eighteen years?  But then one day she ran into Jesus.  Now, what did Jesus do?  Did He tell her she was being punished or to “toughen up”?  No. He looked at her and told her “woman, you’re free!”  He laid His hands on her and suddenly she was standing straight and tall and giving God glory!  Now notice what He said next… “Why shouldn’t we untie this daughter of Abraham (woman of covenant) and lead her from the stall where Satan has had her bound these eighteen years?”  Satan had her bound?  Yes the enemy of her soul, not God.  God had good plans for this lady, He wanted her well.  Jesus didn’t turn her away and He won’t turn you away today.

People are calling good evil and evil good

In Isaiah 5:20, the Bible says that those who call evil good and good evil will experience sorrow or woe.  Why is there “sorrow” for those people?  I believe part of that could be that these individuals are completely disarmed by a false belief system thereby allowing the work of the enemy to be successful against them. If we believe a disease is from God we’re not going to resist it as we would be resisting God Himself. However, if we believe the disease is from the enemy then we’ll fight back and resist him… which is exactly what the Bible tells us to do in James 4:7.

In summary, Sickness and disease are not of God… they are evil.  God is good and your enemy (Satan) is bad.  Submit yourself to God today, resist your enemy and he must flee from you.  Believe the truth of God’s word and know that God loves you and wants you well.  God’s true nature is that of love and not of destruction.  Trust in His love for you.
